Budgeting

Lighting and Lamp offers budget friendly options for your home and business.

In 1956 Jack Oliver and Ruth Wright would measure and cut wire on the downtown Birmingham sidewalk where Jack had marked the footage, as the budget did not allow for purchasing wire in bulk. With both Charles and Ruth having such strong work ethics, they wanted to be absolutely sure they could repay money before borrowing. When they were confident they could repay the debt, they acquired a loan to begin buying in bulk. Somehow they always managed to pay the money back even before it was due.

"Mother learned at an early age to be an excellent money manager. My first lesson she taught me was how to write my first check each month to the church for my tithe. She stressed that everything we have belongs to God." ~ Patsy Wright Burks

Bring in the Lumens! Watts are a Thing of the Past...

Lumens are the newest way of knowing how bright a lamp is says Lighting and Lamp!

Lumens and Watts

The higher the lumen rating the brighter the lamp is. Lumens are the actual amount of ambient lighting coming from a lamp according to Department of Energy

For starters, 10 watts in an LED light are equal to 60 watts conventional which means saving money for you! 60 watts conventional is equivalent to 14 watts in a CFL (Compact Flourescent Light). To obtain about the same brightness as a 60 watt conventional bulb would provide, you will need an LED lamp with around 800 lumens. Lamp packages are clearly marked.

Lighting and Lamp's suggestion below to compare watts to lumens:

  • 25 watts = 230-270 lumens in a lamp
  • 35 watts = 250-280 lumens in a spotlight
  • 40 watts = 440-460 lumens in a lamp
  • 50 watts = 330-400 lumens in an spotlight
  • 60 watts = 800-850 lumens in a lamp
  • 75 watts = 1000-1100 lumens in a lamp
There are different lighting needs in each room of our homes. Kitchens, living areas and bedrooms need specific task lighting for reading, homework, games, etc.

Below is a chart with Lighting and Lamp's suggestions of lumens needed for each room:

  • Living Room - 400 - 500
  • Reading  Area - 400
  • Kitchen - 300-400
  • Kitchen Task Area - 700-800
  • Hallways - 300
  • Bedrooms - 300-400
  • Bedrooms Reading Area - 700-800
  • Bathrooms - 500-600
  • Bathrooms Mirror Area - 700-800
These numbers can be adjusted to fit your personal comfort.

Lighting & Lamp's experienced lighting team has suggestions to offer the best lighting for each area of your home with beautiful options. Contact them today with your ideas and requests. They are sure to have the perfect solution to bring your home to light.

Myths about LED Lighting...

There are several myths about LED lights that we would like to address as summer approaches and you may be thinking of upgrading your landscaping lighting in the Birmingham and surrounding areas
Some think that LED lighting may not be as bright as incandescent lighting. This is not true. A light bulb is guaged by its wattage, meaning a 60 watt bulb is brighter than a 40 watt bulb. This also means a 60 watt bulb uses more electricity, which also means an increase in cost. LED lights produce lumens, a measure of brightness. You have to consider the number of lumens an LED bulb produces. For example, a 29 watt LED light produces about 2600 lumens, which is about the same as a 150 watt incandescent bulb. Keep in mind also, brighter is not always better. At night, brighter lights can cause glare and shadows. This can cost more in electricity unnecessarily, as well as give intruders a place to hide easier.

It is often mistakingly thought that LED lights put off a cold, unflattering bluish light. This may have previously been the case; however as quality has improved, light is not limited to the bluish effect once seen. There is now a wide selection of color temperatures available which determine the light color. Most homeowners are choosing a pure white light for landscape lighting, sometimes choosing a warm white that is nice against brick. The bluish tinted bulbs are usually chosen for underwater lighting for a nice effect.

It may be tempting to allow your landscaper or general contractor to install outdoor lighting. It is a better choice to allow a lighting professional to discuss options, choices and needs with you. While your landscaper is a professional and has experience with ... well, landscaping, they may not have the electrical knowledge and lighting experience to provide you the best solution for your money. Our experienced team of lighting specialists have the knowledge and training that will beautifully brighten your outdoor living area.

Initially choosing LED lighting may seem more expensive than other choices of lighting, but over the life of a bulb, there is substantial savings. LED bulbs last much longer, up to 20 years with 4 hours of use each day. The electricity savings is substantial as well.

Contact the friendly team at Lighting and Lamp today for more information on updating and/or replacing your outdoor lighting. With your ideas and their experience, you are sure to be pleased.

Let Your Business Shine!!

Commercial lighting is important, and even more so if you are a business. Of course, safety is at the top of the list, with energy conservation coming in next. Of course you want your business to have attractive curb appeal that will invite your customers in!

With appropriate lighting, your parking lot and business will be secure from intruders and prowlers. Proper lighting does not allow for shadows, keeping all nooks, crannies and corners well lit. Front doors and other entrances are illuminated to discourage thieves. If your business is open after dark, well lit entrances and parking lots prevent accidents as patrons are entering your business.

With proper illumination, your building will shine, even during closed hours, as drivers pass all through the night. Highlighting an attractive building with brightly lit landscape will draw attention and bring shoppers back during business hours. First impression counts! What better form of advertising?

You do not have to break the bank to make your business shine. Lighting fixtures and bulbs are improving, with energy savings always in mind. Halogen and LED lights have all but replaced outdated incandescent lighting. These lights offer brighter, clearer, better-controlled illumination.

With a Smart Automation System, scheduling individual lights on a timing system, as well as zones on your property allows for energy savings and gaining the most from your lighting.

Randy Calhoun and his experienced team are glad to visit your business in Shelby County, Jefferson County and other areas in Alabama to discuss the best lighting options for your business. With Lighting & Lamp's quality design, creativity and service, you can leave your business at night and feel more secure knowing it is well lit and shining for all to see!

Home Automation for Safety and Energy Savings

Lighting and Lamp is more than 'just lighting and lamps'. Randy Calhoun and his team are experienced with smart home technology and enjoy assisting friends and clients. Home automation is not just for the rich and famous anymore. While you may think of it as futuristic, more and more people are turning to smart home technology.

One of the main reasons for updating your home is safety. With the push of a button, lights are on when you get home rather than pulling into a dark drive or walking into a dark house. With the modern capabilities and access to smartphones and tablets, you can instantly check appliances to confirm you did turn that coffee pot off this morning! It is an amazing relief to be able to check on elderly parents, or teenagers home alone after school. There is peace of mind knowing your parents' stove is off or your teen did not overflow the sink trying to 'help'!

Home automation is available from very small scale to the most elaborate! There are many options to choose from. Many people begin with lighting. Linking your smart phone to your house allows the lighting to be adjusted from anywhere. Occupancy sensors are great on stairways and dark paths outdoors. You can customize your system to automatically turn lights on at dark and even close your window shades.

Energy savings is a great reason to invest in smart home technology. Programming thermostats and lights to go off during the day when no one is home will save bundles! Being able to check in if you were not the last to leave home assures all lights and appliances are off during the day. Occupancy sensors ensure that lights are off in empty spaces, especially closets and bathrooms. Remote controls allow easier access for dimming lights and closing shades.

Everyone is about comfort of course! Home automation allows for the maximum comfort level when you are in your home. Programming window shades to lower during the warm part of the day and raise when the sun is down keeps the temperature in your home consistent. Dimmer switches allow for task or mood lighting.

Home automation systems are convenient to install in new construction and existing homes as well. Wireless solutions offer convenient installation. Available for commercial and personal homes, you will not be disappointed in the choices and options available from Lighting and Lamp. With your smart phone, tablet and remote controls, your home can be controlled with the push of a button!

A Bright Shining New Year ~ Outdoors!

When lighting your outdoor area, safety and security are top priorities. Also important for many of us is to make our outdoor living area beautiful! The front entryway should be brightly lit to ensure safety. Bright light illuminates steps, mats, and other obstacles. You may choose an overhead light directly at the front door, then a pair of matching wall-mounted fixtures flanking the door. If there is a sidewalk, lighting the pathway is important for safety.

For the main yard and gardens, lower levels of lighting are safer than several brightly lit areas, which accentuate darker areas. Lighting areas close to the house allow for entertaining. Lighting a patio is the perfect atmosphere for a family game night or grilling for a celebration. Accenting a plant close to a glass door will avoid reflections from indoors. This allows you to see something beyond the reflections when indoors.

Adding lights midway in the yard enlarges your outdoor living area. Adding highlights to a beautiful tree or lighting a pathway through the garden allows more scenery for an outdoor room.

Showcase your prize rose garden by illuminating a far corner of the yard. Adding path lights around your fence allows you to enjoy your entire outdoor living space.

Outdoor environments can be brutal on even quality fixtures. Contact Lighting & Lamp to assist in choosing the most durable, beautiful fixtures that will provide many years of enjoyment for your outdoor living space!

A Bright Shining New Year ~ The Right Light for a Bedroom

Happy New Year! What better time to rearrange our home, making room for the new and throwing out the old! When changing out pillows or rearranging furniture, take a look around at the lighting. When the lighting is the correct choice in a room, you never even think about the effectiveness of the lighting. However, it is very apparent that it is not right if lighting is too dim, or is casting shadows.

When we think of our bedrooms, maybe we think of escape, quiet, soft surroundings with meaningful items that personalize our space. We spend time in our bedrooms sleeping, reading, or even just plain daydreaming! It should reflect our personalities and be the most comfortable room in our house. It should be the place we go to truly be still and relax.

The lighting in our bedrooms should be consistent with "rest". While we prefer dark to sleep, there should be an overhead light, a beautiful chandelier or stunning ceiling fan. A Lutron dimmer on the overhead light is an excellent idea for softer glow when bright light is not necessary.

Task lighting is essential for reading or needlework. A small chandelier over a nightstand, gorgeous wall sconces or lovely table lamps are options. Soft light at face level is more comfortable than direct light from overhead. Remote lighting controls are available for more convenience.

Closets need good light for matching colors when dressing. Have you ever left the closet with mismatched shoes? Remember to keep bulbs 12 inches from the rod or upper shelf ensuring safety.

The experts at Lighting and Lamp in Pelham are available to discuss your wants and needs. They will be happy to assist you in obtaining the perfect light for your bedroom.

A Bright Shining New Year ~ Lighting for Your Dining Room

A new year brings refreshment! If you are making changes and updating your home, don't ignore your lighting. It may not be noticeable if the lighting is wonderful, but if the lighting is too dark or dim, it is obvious. Perhaps it is time to upgrade your lighting plan throughout your home.

Most of us probably have a chandelier in our dining rooms. Is it up to date? A chandelier is a great way to express our personalities and can set the tone for the room. If your current chandelier is still as beautiful and you love it as much as you did when you chose it or moved in your home, consider adding a Lutron dimmer. Your dining room is the place where everything from parties with a buffet to festive holiday feasts or intimate anniversary dinners are celebrated. Dimmers allow the brightest of light, making everything shine brilliantly, to soft, warm light creating coziness. If your table is large, two chandeliers can be stunning!

If there are French doors leading outdoors from your dining room, adding light outside shining back in adds ambiance back into the room. This can also solve the problem of glass reflection at night, allowing something to see beyond your own reflection.

Is there art in your dining room? Accent lighting will accentuate your exquisite painting. Wall sconces and small table lamps are also lovely options, adding subtle soft light.

Our designers at Lighting and Lamp in Pelham, have virtually unlimited choices from traditional, contemporary, southwestern, eclectic and everything in between! They are excited to combine your ideas and style with their experience to coordinate the perfect lighting for your dining room.

A Bright Shining New Year ~ Entryway and Stairs

Perhaps with a new year you have decided to update, rearrange and renew your home! While decluttering, arranging and decorating, do not neglect your lighting. While you may not be aware of lighting each time you enter a room, it will certainly be obvious if it is dark or shadowed.

An entryway may have natural light coming in from windows in the area. There may be an overhead light in a small entry, however a double height entry requires a chandelier with lighting controls at both the bottom and top of the stairs. Stairways should be brightly lit for safety, but can be beautiful at the same time. Recessed fixturesceiling-mounted fixtures or wall sconces provide ambient lighting in hallways and staircases.

Position directional fixtures if displaying paintings or photographs in a hall or stairway. Accent lighting is an excellent way to to feature artwork.

The professionals at Lighting and Lamp will provide skill and experience in locating and aiming proper bulbs and lumens to avoid glare and ensure that artwork is not damaged.

Rearing Children and Loving Family

Ruth and Charles Wright were very conscious of how they spent their time as well as their money. They decided to go into business for a second time in 1947, opening a restaurant in Crestline Village, Patty's Eat Shop. The business was successful, but the hours were too long for parents of a nine year old, so they decided to sell the business. Charles said he had never had this much money at one time, and Ruth's reply was "and I have never worked 20 out of 24 hours either."

"Mother loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren very much. It was important to her to build memories. Not long before her death, she said that memories are what you will live on in your elder years." ~ Patsy Wright Burks

Being a family owned and operated business, Randy Calhoun and the "family" at Lighting & Lamp, Pelham, AL are anxious to assist with needs in your home to make you and your family more comfortable, safe and encourage "together time" making memories. Having a family game night in the new media room, or a cookout in the back yard that is lit with energy efficient lighting encourages togetherness and will make memories that will last a lifetime.

Ephesians 6:4: And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath; but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

A Bright Shining New Year ~ For Your Kitchen...

It is the beginning of a new year!  Many of us have made New Year's resolutions to clean out and clean up our houses! While decorating and decluttering, remember to evaluate your lighting throughout your home. When appropriate lighting is in place, it may not gain attention, but if it is poor it will certainly be noticeable. Take into consideration the activities that will happen in each room when deciding on lighting options.
Kitchen by SWAG Home Staging
Our kitchens are practically the most important room in our home! Since it is January, kitchens bring to mind comfort food by the crock pot full, delicious aromas wafting from that direction, homework being worked on, chatter from little ones, and lively conversations as everyone catches up on each other's day. Kitchens need task lighting directly over counter tops and the sink area. Under cabinet lighting is a great option as it lights the direct area with no shadows from the person working.

A casual chandelier over the table will allow bright light for homework, bill paying as well as enjoying a family dinner. Chandeliers are a delightful way to add personality to your kitchen. Adding a dimmer to the switch can allow softer light when desired. Pendant lights are a beautiful way to provide adequate lighting over an island.

The experienced team at Lighting and Lamp is excited to combine their knowledge with your ideas and needs to make your kitchen shine!

A Bright Shining New Year ~ For Your Living Room...

With a new year comes the effort of getting organized. In order to complete a feel of organization, lighting in a home is necessary to consider.  When appropriate lighting is in place, it might not gain great attention, but if lighting is poor, even the smallest task can be frustrating. While contemplating light choices, take into account several items before making those decisions. The purpose of your room, multiple light sources and comfort.
Our living rooms and family rooms are exactly what they say they are! Rooms to live in and celebrate being a family! When decorating, and thinking of activities that take place in the most popular space in our home, lighting may not be the first thing that comes to mind, but if lighting is not “right”, it will certainly be noticed! Proper lighting is one of the things that you may not realize, unless it is not right!

To accommodate reading, watching television, playing board games, conversation and entertaining, layered lighting is important. Task lighting is absolutely necessary for reading. There are many varieties of lamps, all shapes, colors and sizes from table top to floor lamps. Floor lamp torchieres with translucent globes facing upward provide soft light with no shadows. Lamps are great for board games, visiting, and laptop use as well.

What is ambient lighting? Rather than recessed downlights, ambient lighting bounces from the ceiling creating brightness in the room without shadows. Wash your walls with light using valance lighting or track lighting that is directed toward the walls. If there is an entertainment center, bookcase or curio cabinet, adding a piece of millwork and a slim linear fluorescent with good color rendering will add instant warmness. Dimmers allow flexibility in amount of light depending on the current activity.

Accenting artwork, a beautiful fireplace or plant is a great way to add warm light, as well as show off your favorite prize!

It is a new year! Take a look around your family room and make it Shine! Lighting and Lamp's experts are happy to guide you in your new adventure.
